The Hermit Tarot Card and its Meaning

The Hermit Tarot Card and its Meaning

Hermit

The Hermit tarot card, number nine on the deck, is closely associated with the zodiac sign Virgo, and is the card for contemplation, analysis, solitude, patience, discernment, and wisdom, like the tarot card of the High Priestess.

It is one of the more intriguing and enigmatic cards in the tarot deck. It shows a lonely hooded and bearded figure looking down below while holding a lamp, which holds a bright star that illuminates the sky.

Some tarot decks depict the star inside the lamp as the Star of David. But always the Hermit is illustrated as solitary.

It may be the good kind of solitary, or the bad kind of solitary, and it may be caused by external factors. But one thing is for sure.

It may look like a simple picture but it signifies a complicated situation no matter which area it turns up in your tarot reading. And it will always focus on solitude.

The Hermit represents your desire for some peace and isolation, just like the Three of Wands. It symbolizes a time for introspection and organization.

It signals a time to take stock of your life and withdraw from socialization, action, and discussions. Doing so will lead you to experience enlightenment and see clarity.

The Hermit is also a very spiritual card and is often associated with religious organizations and institutions. Even if you are a free thinker, the Hermit indicates spirituality, and that includes what the word “spirit” means to you.

You may be at that point in your life where you are seeking answers and finding out the truth, but you don’t need to do it alone. If you do need to be alone, don’t be afraid to be.

Being alone is not a sign of weakness.

The Hermit Tarot and Love

The Hermit may be alone on top of that mountain, but that doesn’t mean you have to follow suit.

As a matter of fact, what the Hermit is trying to tell you is that you need to look at your life closely and be thankful of all the good things you have.

You need to set your focus on what you need from love, not what you want from love. Once you have the answers, you have the power to achieve it with the help of your relationships.

If your relationship is going through a rocky phase, the Hermit is telling you to put your emotions aside, let tempers die down, and look at the relationship without all the bad stuff.

Focus on what brought the two of you together and what made you fall in love with each other.

Oftentimes, it’s not the absence of love that’s the cause of the problem but the external issues. Like stress, work, money, or even the kids.

Allow yourself to feel the love again like it were brand new and put emphasis on the real connection that you and your partner share.

If you’re single and looking for love, the Hermit tarot can hold two meanings for you: your feelings of loneliness brought about by not being in a relationship, and your desire to take a break from searching and just let love find you instead.

Either way, you can take this opportunity to love yourself and make yourself happy. Go ahead and sign up for that calligraphy class you’ve always wanted to do. Pack your bags and embark on a soul searching road trip.

Join that pole dancing class, or swim with sharks! Just do the things you’ve always wanted to do, things you won’t be able to do freely if you were in a relationship.

The Hermit Tarot and Money

The Hermit, when it comes to money, signifies the need to be conservative.

When it comes to investments and financial transactions, always proceed with caution, and always make informed decisions. There’s no room for risk taking or gambling.

If you’re unemployed and feeling the stress to find a job and make money, instead of thinking how much you should be paid, think about the kind of job that you will enjoy doing.

Envision the life that you want to create, paint the image of money coming in, and finances being put to order. If you think it often enough, it will be made manifest.

The Hermit Tarot’s Meaning for the Future

If you’re in a happy and healthy relationship, the Hermit tarot is not something you want to show up in the future position. But there are exceptions.

For example, if you are in an abusive relationship, the Hermit can mean that you are finally able to break free and stop being a victim.

It means time for spiritual enlightenment and solitary reflection. So if you must go on some much needed solitary retreat, by all means, do it!

You are about to move forward to the next phase of your life, so you must get rid of the bad stuff that are impeding your progress.

You will not be lonely forever, but you have to do your part to make sure this happens.

Is the Hermit a Sign of Good Luck?

The Hermit is a major arcana card that is often associated with the idea of you venturing into a phase of your life where you are about to indulge in some soul-searching.

There can also be the idea of spiritual enlightenment or you working on your inner self in some way so you can feel better about your life, thoughts and emotions.

In order to do this, you are going to require some time alone to then allow you to really contemplate everything that is happening around you.

It can also point to you feeling the need to withdraw from certain aspects of life to then recover from some kind of tough situation that has had a negative impact on you.

The Hermit card is not explicitly linked to the idea of good luck, but when you look at what it does bring to you, then it becomes clear that it is certainly not going to be hindering you or bringing some bad luck in your direction.

It can indicate that you are going to move into a more whole part of your life where there are stronger and better relationships.

It can point to you discovering a new career that is more suited to your own individual preferences. It can also refer to a change in your attitude towards your health that is for the positive.

If you then draw the Hermit in reverse position, then it does not mean that you are about to be struck down by some bad luck.

Instead, it is more of a warning shot that the actions you may have taken in withdrawing and soul-searching have gone too far to a certain extent and that you need to be aware of this.

It is effectively telling you that it is about time you returned to the world in your new format and to see how things are then going to be working out for you.

The Hermit is really telling you that now is the time to effectively draw a line in the sand with this soul-searching aspect and to move onto something else or it runs the very real risk of damaging you.

At the same time, if you have not indulged in this soul-searching, then drawing this card in reverse can mean that it is about time that you committed yourself to it in some way.

It can be seen as an attempt to get you to turn the focus inwards rather than constantly outwards.

Overall, the Hermit is more of an advisory card that is teaching you to pay attention to your own self rather than allowing yourself to be swept up by the world.

While it is not directly providing you with a sense of good luck, it is also not placing obstacles in your way either.

Instead, it has the intention of making your life feel smoother than before and for you to have a superior understanding of what is happening and the direction in which you should be heading next.

My Final Thoughts on the Hermit Tarot

One of the most important lessons we can learn from the Hermit is that you need to experience how it feels to be alone at one point in your life.

In solitude, you can discover things about yourself and the world that you normally wouldn’t if you were with somebody.

And to be able to truly commit to another person, you must experience how it is to be alone with yourself first. If not, you are only in a relationship because you can’t stand being alone.

There are just some things that are best enjoyed when you’re alone. Like reading a book. Or meditating. Even taking a bubble bath.

Having a cup of coffee all by your lonesome is a different experience from having a cup of coffee with friends.

The Hermit wants you to be more independent and in control of the events in your life, like the Emperor, especially in times of trial and distress.

Help is readily available from friends and family, but it is through self-reflection that you can truly rise above the challenge and move on forward. It’s perfectly normal. What’s so bad about being alone?
